Misfit Flagship and Portfolio Apps

In 15 months as a core UI designer in a world-leading smartwatch company, I worked with an international team to enhance digital product design and user-centered design. These products relate to Misfit Shine/Shine 2, Misfit Ray, Misfit Path, and Misfit Vapor, and are focused on Link Function, Misfit Store, In-App Purchase, and Device change Onboarding features.

My Role

I collaborated with two other designers on Misfit Flagship app from Dec 2015 to Apr 2017. My responsibilities included user research, information architecture, designing user flows, visual design, prototyping, user testing. My contribution to design is 60% UI and 40% UE.

TASK 1: LAP COUNTING & SPEEDO SHINE TIPS

Previously, Misfit app does not have Lap Counting, but users are required function of swimming a lot. Through hard work with our internal team, we made a Lap Counting feature for swimmers and launched an In-app purchase solution for our previous users who want to use Lap Counting Function. We also cooperate with Speedo and get expert data to improve our accuracy of the device.

The Problem

Need to include important activity functions in the app. Most of our users complain about the effectiveness of activity tracking. Our target will be new and current users who are not satisfied with the app activity function. Quote from one of our end-users: "I saw the waterproof feature for this device, but I can not use it for swimming." (Bottom up approach)

Challenge

Misfit 2.0 design is in processing, so we have long-term and short-term for promoting app experience. For finding out the best effective way for increasing experience of activity tracking and DAU rating, we also need meet the needs of Misfit 2.0 design as well(Top down approach).

3 most effective way for raise rating of the app.
- Raise brand awareness of effective digital- forward life: Let advertising associate with strong brand. For example, Co-Branding with Speedo.


- Increase exposure in App store by add new features related trend technology. App store features related in app purchase.
- Accurate the measurement of activity. For instance, Internal algorithm improvement, IMU sensor firmware update and counting method promotion for lap counting.


Our business goal increased the sales of hardware product and more profit from software. It will motivate new user to purchase new device and engaging current user to use apple in-app-purchase to unlock lap counting.

Pain-Driven Design

For current user, we add pop-up for introduce the new feature, make sure user engaged by speedo. After purchased, the new feature will be unlock.

In Beta version, user confused of this feature of lap counting. So we tested lap counting feature for 2 weeks and collected the database from our test users and team members. Then we made improve for setting up the timer to let experience smooth.

There are many features, Why swim?

- User-oriented:
The activity feature is the most complaints from our user, and our user wants it badly. We accurately find data through App Store, Play Store, and other B2C platforms.

- It’s a great breakthrough:
We had collaborated with the SPEEDO brand already.
Not only benefited our marketing team in finding a new way to leverage branding, but also our engineering team with algorithm improvement; and most importantly, our users can use the features more easily.

Result
It’s our starting place and a huge success. Customers are satisfied. The feature of lap counting. We have great feedback from our users 10% of present users use it feature for the first month.

Our Appstore rate is from 3.2 to 4.6.

To add a new product Misfit Phase we created new tutorials during the on-boarding process. Tutorials base on our hardware device interaction & firmware possibility includes animations and instructions.

What I learn in Misfit company

- Gain product think from bottom-up creative thinking and top-down critical thinking.
- Self-awareness the hierachy of knowlege, then find way to create new things base on the knowlege.
