Global Tuning Tool Product Design

For 15 months from 2017-2018, I was part of an international team effort for a complete redesign of the Global Tuning Tool(GTT) application. GTT launched In 2018, and was featured at the HARMAN Showcase at CES 2018.

My Role

My responsibilities included user research, product strategy, aligning stakeholders on product goals, visual design, prototyping. I also created design frameworks and designed guidelines for the coming up design feature(Drag & drop creation of signal flows with automated tuning panel creation and access to all audio algorithms).

Brainstorming Workshop

I had been to Germany with all team together, and organized user research. (5 Internal: 1 product manager/ 2 acoustic engineers/ 1 Design manager/ 1 Sr, User experience desginer; 3 External: 3 Engineers from BMW.)

Context

GTT is part of a suit of 3 products of HARMAN AudioWorX which is the highest quality of embedded audio system, and original product, is audio algorithm toolbox, but in 2017 HARMAN decide that it was boarding its offering to be a more comprehensive embedded audio system. This tool will make it possible to configure the audio algorithm database framework seamlessly and intuitively, as well as to tune the algorithm suite, from the comfort of the laptop. The role of global tuning tool is to help tuning engineers to connect core audio products of clients more efficiently. Like BMW, Audi, etc.

To iterate and improve existing features for engineers. On the other hand, create new interaction flow for product manager and clients, ensure user access back and forth debug.

The users

After brainstorming. We defined that users are generally from one of two categories - 1. Internal acoustic engineer expert or 2. External Clients's engineers and actively learner.

The problem space

A huge system and complicated process. Engineers used to use old hardware, and they were confused about embedded software. My job is to redesign the interface of the software and replace some parts of the old hardware system based on the knowledge they have.
As someone has a experience in B2B project of Misfit health dashboard, my critical assumption was that GTT is the best for external teams compiling all Signal Flow design module-type work into one place, and conformation from product manager when a team keeps growing, they would reach a point when advanced task-management is more crucial than the functionality of the tools. The complex process is not just for our internal engineers, but also for our external engineers who are not familiar with this tool.

Engineers are struggling with shut down software. They need understandable tool icons, fficiently interaction design, constantly shift between each pages to check the hardware. They also requrie indicator of feedback for most status.

Iteration

Through an interactive process, I was quickly draft idea with engineers. They give me feedback for make useability improvements.

- Significant iterations for a clear training process. After two days meeting section, I creat a prototapy video to communicate a clear process.
- Reorganise the element and userability
- 5 days support team understantd for final presentation.

Design Decisions

- Add tutorials to lower the entry barrier for external engineers.
To prevent the precipitous learning curve overwhelms new users and discourages them from adapting to the tool.

- Eliminate all extra setup time for starting make a real acoustic module.
Create a thumbnail and a zoom view to avoid inconvenienced by the initial setup. (Because of the flexibility)

- Create high visibility of system status
User have see neviation system, would not be lost in each page.

System Configuration Functinal Mockup

Meet the needs of different clients; Therefore, we specially customized the tuning system for the car.

Solutions
This plugin makes it possible to configure the design task management seamlessly and intuitively. A task can easily be created by simple interaction "drag & drop" and adjusted by and visible task tracker with automated Slack notifications.

Designers more issues with time management. No need for more time on management tools like Product managers uses JIRA.

That way, engineers can find the best solution on their next generative innovation audio system, and offer in-depth support for their client's audio needs.

What I have learn

Restructuring and redesigning SaaS application was challenging, therefore; I had to deeply consider the exact context behind productivity tools and ultimately improve user's productivity and collaboration.
